My dogs love to play. Samba always wants me to throw the ball for her to chase.
She brings it back and drops it in front of me. Then she stands there staring at the ball as if it's going to spring into my hand all by itself.
Whe the pups were little we gave them a number of different things to play with to challenge them. They had a ramp that they had to learn to walk up without walking off the end. Rob made a teeter for them and they had to learn to balance on it.
One of the things they most enjoyed was the trampoline.
They made up a game. One puppy would get underneath the trampoline and the others would either get on top or run around the sides and the one under had to protect his or her space and not let any of the others under. They all seemed to love this game and played it for hours taking turns being the one defending the space.
When they got a little older they would chase each other around the yard and under the trampoline was a safe spot. The dog being chased would crawl under to rest and the others waited until that one came out and the chase could continue. Eventually they grew too big to fit under the trampoline, so now the space under the swing is a safe area. They all understand that if a dog runs under the swing the others have to wait and can't touch the one resting. When he or she comes out from under the swing they can be chased or jumped on.
I'm not sure how they decide on the rules to the games, but they all understand them.
Maybe these little gab sessions are where the rules are discussed.
